Bacteriostatic water is sterile water for injection containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol. It is used to reconstitute lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides for research. The benzyl alcohol prevents bacterial growth after the vial is punctured, allowing multi-dose use over 7-14 days when refrigerated.
An opened 30mL vial of bacteriostatic water lasts approximately 28 days when stored at 2–8°C (refrigerated) and used with sterile technique. After 28 days, or sooner if the solution becomes cloudy or discolored, discard the vial.
Sterile water (without benzyl alcohol) can be used for single-dose reconstitution but is not suitable for multi-dose protocols. Unlike bacteriostatic water, sterile water contains no preservative, meaning any punctured vial must be used immediately and discarded. For most research protocols, bacteriostatic water is preferred.
